Have Medicare or Medicare Advantage and Need Help With High Cholesterol, Prediabetes, Weight Management, or Digestive Issues?

Nutrition counseling can help, but if you have Medicare or Medicare Advantage, your visits may NOT be covered.

Here's what you need to know.

When Does Medicare Cover Nutrition Counseling?

Medicare Part B generally covers visits with a registered dietitian for these conditions:

  • Diabetes: Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

  • Chronic kidney disease: Certain kidney conditions when you are not on dialysis.

  • Kidney transplant: Within the past 36 months.

You will need a referral from your healthcare provider.

If you qualify, Medicare generally covers these visits at no cost to you when you see a participating provider.

What Does Medicare Usually NOT Cover?

Medicare generally does not cover dietitian visits for these conditions alone:

  • Digestive issues: IBS, bloating, constipation, or acid reflux.

  • Heart health: High cholesterol or high blood pressure.

  • Prediabetes: High blood sugar without a diabetes diagnosis.

  • Weight management: Weight loss or obesity.

  • Other concerns: Fatty liver or food intolerances, etc.

These are very important health concerns, but they do not qualify for standard Medicare nutrition therapy coverage on their own.

What If I Have Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plans?

Medicare Advantage Plans generally have the same coverage requirements and limits as Medicare part B.

Some plans may offer extra benefits. However, at Ginger Spice Health, we have not yet seen a Medicare Advantage plan that offers additional dietitian visits for conditions outside Medicare's standard nutrition therapy coverage.

Always check with your insurance plan to confirm your benefits.

Can I Still See a Dietitian If Medicare Doesn't Cover It?

Absolutely!

You do not have to wait until prediabetes becomes diabetes or your digestive symptoms get worse to seek help.

"Nutrition is Life-changing and Your Health is worth investing in!"
